Verdict · buy it if, skip it if
Valve Index remains a Steam ecosystem classic: lighthouse tracking, Knuckles finger presence, and off-ear speakers that owners still single out.
The receipts here are audio-heavy for a reason. The floating speaker design is a real comfort and immersion win. Resolution and lenses are aging next to 2026 pancake and micro-OLED headsets, and at roughly 809 g it is not a light modern HMD. Do not buy Index as the 2026 default clarity or comfort pick. Skip it if you want wireless standalone, easy inside-out setup, or sharper text than 1440×1600 per eye. It still makes sense if you want Knuckles plus Index audio and already own SteamVR base stations.

"It's honestly one of the best quality audio devices you can wear on your head. Fidelity is amazing and even low end sounds are great. The fact that it can pull this off while not resting on your ears is amazing."Read the thread ↗
"The speakers on the Valve Index sound INCREDIBLE. I fired up Hellblade and the 3D audio sounds fantastic on the Index. If you're an audiophile, the Index is the new benchmark for VR headsets as far as I'm concerned. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the speakers just "float" above your ears and don't actually touch your head."Read the thread ↗
"The way the Index does audio is seriously the best I could ask for on a VR headset. I hate putting things in my ears, over the ear muffles outside sound and can become irritating over time, plus it retains heat, and the Index speakers solve all of that. It remains almost unhearable unless you have the headset on, and if you want to use other headphones you can just flip them up."Read the thread ↗
"The audio quality itself isn't as great as my Huh Duh Six Fiddys, but the spacialization of the domed diaphragms hovering off your ears make the immersion jaw droppingly good. It's definitely better than wireless "gamer" headsets."Read the thread ↗
"The audio is great and all, but the biggest reason why I love them is comfort since they do not touch your ears."Read the thread ↗

Before you buy
Only for a specific stack: Knuckles, off-ear audio, and SteamVR lighthouses. For most people, newer pancake or Quest-class options are the better default.
The speakers float off your ears. Owners praise spatial sound and long-session comfort because nothing clamps or seals against the ear.
Anyone chasing maximum clarity, minimum weight, wireless standalone, or a headset that works without base stations.
