Half-Life: Alyx's native Linux build can exit when a player shoots a barnacle and its blood spray fills the view. MIXED reports that three accounts on Valve's SteamVR for Linux tracker describe the failure, across AMD and Nvidia cards. Valve's nearby duplicate closure concerns a separate train-ride crash whose linked reports reach back to 2020.
The reported trigger and cards
The opening barnacle report, issue #983, dates to October 3. Its steps are to start SteamVR, connect a Steam Frame, launch native Alyx, then shoot a barnacle while looking at it. The reporter says the game exits almost every time the spray fills the view, including on Steam client and SteamVR betas and SteamOS Preview.
That system uses a Radeon RX 9070 XT with Mesa 26.2.4. MIXED describes matching reports on an RTX 3090 and an RTX 4080. The RTX 3090 report places the crash in a worker thread in libscenesystem.so, with no GPU driver frames in the stack.
Those are reported configurations, rather than a complete list of affected cards. All three accounts use Steam Frame, and the reports provide no count of affected owners. The cause remains unresolved.
What Valve's duplicate closure means
MIXED's tracker check at 23:44 UTC on October 4 found #983 open without a Valve reply. The response it did find was Valve member kisak-valve closing issue #986 as a duplicate earlier that day.
That report describes a fatal assertion in entity serialization during the a2_pistol train ride. Two crashes, nine days apart, followed the same autosave and failed at the same bit offset. It has a different trigger and crash signature from the barnacle report.
Valve pointed to #405, #784 and #801. MIXED found all three still open at its check. Issue #405 dates to November 9, 2020 and describes SteamVR failing after a quarantine-zone area load. The two later reports concern loading-screen models and level transitions. The closure supplies no fix for the barnacle crash.
