Horizon OS v2.9 adds a Quest window manager that places three windows side by side or in a stack. According to MIXED's report on Meta's release notes, the update begins rolling out gradually to Public Test Channel users during the week of September 28, 2026. Meta has yet to announce a general-release date.

How the window controls change

The window manager is in Quick settings and shows the windows you have open. In a stacked layout, clicking the top portion of a window switches to it. Meta also says apps now launch spatially so users can drag and position their windows more easily.

Window placement changes too. Meta says windows attach to surfaces more reliably, and moving a window close to a wall snaps it into place. A dedicated grab handle now sits in each window's control bar, with buttons on either side for advanced options and closing the window.

That control bar loses its separate anchoring option. The report leaves open whether wall snapping covers every use of the old control, particularly for owners who attach panels to surfaces other than walls.

When owners can expect it

The September 28 week marks the start of a gradual rollout to people enrolled in the Public Test Channel. Enrolment means accepting pre-release software, and the rollout schedule does not guarantee that every participant gets the changes at once.

MIXED says Meta's notes give no headset list for the window manager. The notes name Quest 3 and Quest 3S for other changes, but that leaves this feature's device support unresolved. The report describes Meta's stated behavior rather than owner testing.
