Meta has given its realistic Hologram avatars a release path. A shoulders-up version is due in early access on Meta Ray-Ban Display for WhatsApp calls in the US this fall. A full-body version is planned for Meta VR Glasses when they launch in spring 2027.
The two versions put the avatar in different places. On Ray-Ban Display, the person receiving the call sees a generated video of you on their screen. The glasses' microphones drive its facial expressions. UploadVR tried the feature at Meta Connect and reported that it looked convincing, although the reporter noticed small mismatches in his own avatar.
On VR Glasses, another wearer can see a full-body avatar at roughly human scale. The first version is a stereoscopic video image, rather than a three-dimensional body that can be viewed from every side. UploadVR's demonstration looked best while the viewer stayed still. Walking around the avatar made it rotate to face the viewer, and fine details such as the eyes looked blocky in that demo.
What buyers can expect
Meta VR Glasses are due in spring 2027 at about $1,300. UploadVR says Meta plans to bring the full-body Hologram feature to Quest 3 eventually, but gave no date. Meta also described a later volumetric version that would support viewing from different angles and use in VR apps. It gave no schedule for that upgrade.
