Verdict · buy it if, skip it if

The original Bigscreen Beyond is the older, smaller sibling: a custom-fitted micro-OLED PCVR headset built around extreme light weight and OLED blacks.

Owners who needed neck relief love how little it weighs, and the face mold is part of why it works. It is also niche hardware: lighthouse base stations, no adjustable IPD, a small sweet spot, and glare that can undercut those blacks. Do not buy gen 1 as a 2026 default if Beyond 2 is available and you want the improved lenses and ultralight winner path. Skip it without a strong PC and base stations. Consider it only if you want the first-gen Beyond form factor or find a good deal and accept its compromises.

Why it wins

  • Very light PCVR headset that helps with neck fatigue
  • Custom face mold for a personal fit
  • Micro-OLED true blacks when glare is not dominating the scene
  • Tiny face-hugging form factor for people who hate bulky HMDs

Where it falls short

  • Superseded by Beyond 2, which is now the locked ultralight winner
  • Small sweet spot and noticeable glare versus newer pancakes
  • Requires SteamVR lighthouses and other PCVR hardware
  • No adjustable IPD; factory custom fit only
  • Cable tug can move such a light headset off the sweet spot

"The portion of the lens that is clear is very small and it's a considerable downgrade from the Index. … Moreover, the glare is more intense than the Index and this can almost entirely negate the benefit of the display's superb black levels in certain environments."

"The beyond is a niche product with tons of compromises. Its lenses aren't that good and have a small sweet spot, you must run lighthouses and a bunch of other hardware, no adjustable IPD, etc."

Before you buy

Questions worth asking

Should I buy Beyond 1 or Beyond 2?

Prefer Beyond 2 if you are buying new for long sessions. Gen 1 still makes sense mainly on price, or if you want that first-gen unit.

Is the custom face mold required?

Yes. It is built around a custom facial interface rather than a generic foam pad.

Who should not buy Beyond?

Anyone without a gaming PC and lighthouse setup, or anyone who wants standalone games and easy inside-out tracking.

How bad is the glare?

Enough that some owners say it nearly cancels the OLED black-level advantage in certain scenes. It is a known tradeoff of the design.
