Astro Bot Rescue Mission has a community mod for standalone Quest 3 and PC VR, according to Road to VR's October 5 report. Modder Bigmak94 calls the project AstroQuest. The Quest 3 version reportedly runs on the headset itself, but players need a copy of the game dumped from a console, and standalone play comes with lower visual quality.
The 2018 platformer originally required PSVR. Sony's game page still lists the PS4 version with a PSVR headset and PlayStation Camera requirement. Road to VR reports that Sony never brought it to PSVR 2. AstroQuest offers another way to access that VR game through a community project.
Two builds with different tradeoffs
Road to VR says Bigmak94 used the AI agent Claude to modify shadPS4, an open-source PlayStation 4 emulator. The result is a Quest 3 build that players can sideload and a PC VR build that streams to other headsets.
According to the report, the mod has positional and rotational head tracking, native controller mapping and spatial audio. It also supports a PS5 DualSense controller in place of the PS4 controller the game expects, including touchpad and motion-sensor inputs, rumble and the light bar.
Those inputs matter in this game. Sony describes how the DualShock 4 becomes in-game gadgets such as a hook shot and water cannon, while players lean to look around corners. Controller compatibility is part of adapting the original interactions.
Bigmak94 describes the standalone build as functional and playable, but says it pushes the Quest 3's mobile GPU to its limits. Road to VR reports lower resolution and visual fidelity than the original PS4 version or PC VR mode. Its article links the project's GitHub for installation and game-dump information.
