iFixit has taken apart Steam Frame and found a headset with several accessible parts and two difficult repairs. The face and headrest foams come off separately, as does the nose bridge. The optical and computer assembly detaches from the head strap, which holds the speakers and battery.
The 20.9 Wh battery is inside that removable strap. Getting to it does not require opening the displays, but iFixit had to loosen adhesive with isopropyl alcohol and pry the pack out. It found no release tabs or other easy way to remove the glue. iFixit says it will not sell Steam Frame batteries when its first parts become available, though it hopes that changes.
The cooling fan is harder to reach. iFixit had to go past the optics and through the internal assembly to get to it. The controllers use replaceable AA batteries, but their thumbsticks are soldered to the board. The lens and display stacks attach to their adjustment rail with magnets; their cables still have to be freed for a replacement.
