Steam's new Pyrowave settings hint at 125 to 300 Mbit/s streaming bitrates

Steam's beta adds Pyrowave bitrate controls. The linked evaluation explains the 125 to 300 Mbit/s range, but headset buyers still need clarity and latency tests.

Steam's October 1 beta added @PyrowavePSNR and @PyrowaveHeightFactor to tune automatic bitrate calculation for Pyrowave Remote Play streams, MIXED reports. Valve's notes link to a codec evaluation with a roughly 125 to 300 Mbit/s quality curve. For Steam Frame and Steam Link users, the important question is how that evidence applies to a headset.

MIXED reports that Valve has yet to publish the settings' defaults, units or accepted values. Their names suggest quality and viewing-distance controls, but the exact mapping remains an inference.

Where the bitrate range comes from

The figures come from PyroWave author Hans-Kristian Arntzen's evaluation. At a viewing distance twice the active image height, his chosen quality target needs about 125 to 300 Mbit/s across 720p to 4K. Bitrate demand starts flattening around 1440p. At a closer distance of 1.5 times image height, it flattens around 1800p.

The chart expresses bitrate at 60 frames per second. Arntzen tested 16:9 images, and his metric measures brightness error with an adjustment for viewing distance. Those conditions matter when applying the curve to another display.
