Valve's keyboard fixes have yet to resolve character naming for two owners of Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR, according to MIXED's report. Both posted in Valve's SteamVR bug forum that the keyboard fails to appear when a new game asks for a character name. They cannot continue past that screen.
Valve released a fix in SteamVR beta 2.18.1 on September 23 that named Skyrim VR and covered the keyboard failing to appear in "some scenarios". SteamOS 0.4.1 for Steam Frame followed with a fix for the keyboard failing to appear during streaming. MIXED reports that both fixes arrived on beta channels.
Where the reported failure happens
One owner says both games stop at character naming through SteamVR, while OpenComposite works. That comparison is the owner's evidence for blaming SteamVR. It leaves the cause unresolved.
The more detailed report describes a Steam Frame streaming over VR Link from a Linux PC. The owner runs both Windows games through Proton on CachyOS, using a GMKtec EVO-X2 with an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and the SteamVR beta channel.
When the game requests a name, the virtual keyboard never appears. The controller models freeze in place even though the controllers still track. SteamVR's dashboard remains usable. Opening its keyboard manually does not put text into the game's name field, and a physical keyboard connected to the host also fails to enter text there.
MIXED reports that Valve had replied to neither thread and that neither had replies from other owners. The two reports establish that these owners remain blocked. They leave the frequency of the fault, and results on other setups, unknown.
