As the maker publishes it

Verdict · buy it if, skip it if

The M5 Vision Pro is a premium spatial computer for Apple users who already live in Mac, iPhone, and visionOS workflows and want snappier spatial apps, faster spatial photo and scene work, and a better Dual Knit Band fit than the 2024 M2 unit.

It keeps the same micro-OLED panels, speakers, exterior design, tethered battery pack, and passthrough cameras, so this is not a new headset class. Skip it if you want mainstream VR games, mixed-reality value, or a first headset. Meta Quest 3 still wins those paths. Also skip an upgrade from an M2 Vision Pro unless the faster chip or the new band matters to you; several owners barely notice day-to-day differences beyond specific creative and AI workloads.

Why it wins

  • Same high-resolution micro-OLED stack with noticeable clarity gains vs M2 when looking at real iPhone or Apple Watch screens through passthrough
  • M5 makes spatial photos, scenes, and interactive apps feel snappier; visionOS features run on the new silicon
  • Dual Knit Band / counterweighted strap options help take weight off the face for longer sittings
  • Still the Apple-ecosystem spatial computer: Personas, widgets, spatial scenes, Mac and iPhone continuity

Where it falls short

  • Enterprise price with no mainstream game library. Quest 3 remains the default for most people, standalone play, and everyday MR
  • Same tethered battery pack, speakers, exterior, and passthrough cameras as the M2 unit, so it is a chip update rather than a redesign
  • Many M2 owners report little day-to-day difference beyond specific creative workloads
  • Optional Dual Knit Band comfort is real for some heads, but not everyone finds the accessory worth the add-on price
  • Heavy premium headset; gaming and third-party spatial titles are still ramping

▶ 1:59"Same dimensions, same aluminum frame and glass on the outside, same buttons and Digital Crown, same speakers, same exact high-resolution micro-OLED displays on the inside with the same field of view, same exact battery with the same tethered cable that you put in your pocket while you're wearing the headset."

Questions worth asking

Should I upgrade from the M2 Vision Pro to the M5?

Only if you feel limited by M2 performance in spatial creation, AI features, or sustained interactive apps, or if the Dual Knit Band fit matters to you. Several M2 owners say they hardly notice the difference in daily use.

Is the M5 Vision Pro better than Meta Quest 3 for most buyers?

No. Quest 3 is still the locked pick for most people, standalone, and mixed reality. Buy M5 Vision Pro for Apple spatial computing and micro-OLED fidelity, not as the default headset.

Did Apple fix the weight and face pressure?

Not by redesigning the headset core. Dimensions and battery tether are the same. The Dual Knit Band and rear counterweight help many owners keep weight off the forehead and cheeks, but comfort still varies by head shape.

Is passthrough better on M5?

Reviewers note the passthrough cameras are the same, so the world view is largely unchanged. Some still report clearer looking-at-device moments versus M2, but do not expect a new camera generation.

Is this a good gaming headset?

Not as a primary games machine. Spatial gaming is still growing, and Quest remains far stronger for library and value if play is your main goal.
