Verdict · buy it if, skip it if

Pico 4 Ultra is the MR/passthrough refresh of Pico 4: newer silicon, color passthrough owners use day to day, and a stock strap many call more comfortable than Quest 3 without $100 of mods.

Some prefer its still-image passthrough clarity; others note more blur in motion than Quest 3. It is not Quest 3 for most people. Meta still wins on library, U.S. retail, and support. Skip Ultra if you need easy U.S. warranty coverage, if the biggest game store matters most, or if a plain Pico 4 already covers your wireless PCVR needs at a lower price.

Why it wins

  • Stock headstrap balance owners often compare favorably to a Quest 3 plus elite-style mods
  • Color mixed-reality passthrough that owners report using day to day
  • XR2 Gen 2-class hardware with clearer wireless PCVR headroom than original Pico 4
  • Rear battery pack that DIY owners like for long-term replaceability

Where it falls short

  • Not Quest 3 for most people: a thinner store and weaker U.S. retail and support
  • Passthrough can look blurrier than Quest 3 while moving, even if still clarity is strong
  • Higher price class than Pico 4; upgrade only if MR and newer silicon matter to you
  • Regional availability and warranty still decide whether buying is practical
  • Catalog refresh tops out around 72/90 Hz, so it is not a high-refresh headset

"The headstrap that comes with it have a nice balance to it, like having an Elite-Headstrap with battery included, and the headset is noticeably lighter in weight. ... The IPD adjustment is far superior in Pico to that of the Quest 3 ... Depth perception was clearly a lot better"

Questions worth asking

Is Pico 4 Ultra better than Quest 3?

Comfort and stock balance often favor Ultra in owner reports. Quest 3 still wins for most people on library, U.S. availability, and overall mixed-reality software.

How is Ultra different from Pico 4?

Ultra is the MR refresh with newer silicon and stronger passthrough/PCVR headroom. Owners who tried both often say they cannot go back to the original Pico 4's brightness, Wi‑Fi, and streaming limits.

Should U.S. buyers get Pico 4 Ultra?

Only if you accept import/support risk and care more about comfort or hardware than Meta's store. For easy warranty and the mainstream path, Quest 3 remains the safer recommendation.

Who should not buy Pico 4 Ultra?

Anyone who needs the biggest standalone library, easy U.S. retail support, or who would be fine with a cheaper Pico 4 for wireless PCVR alone.
