Apple M2 and R1

As the maker publishes it

Verdict · buy it if, skip it if

The 2024 Apple Vision Pro (M2) is for Apple users who can absorb the price and want micro-OLED clarity, eye-and-hand spatial UI, and Mac/iPhone continuity more than a game library.

Passthrough and spatial placement are what you pay for. Owners often reposition the battery themselves because face pressure and front weight show up quickly. At enterprise pricing it only makes sense when the spatial desktop and media experience matter more than Quest-class games. Do not buy it as a mainstream VR or mixed-reality headset. Meta Quest 3 is the default for most people, standalone play, and everyday MR. Skip it if you want value, long active gaming sessions, or low face pressure out of the box.

Why it wins

  • Micro-OLED center clarity that makes text, video, and spatial windows feel premium
  • Color passthrough plus eye-and-hand control that sell the spatial-computing pitch
  • Apple ecosystem integration: Mac and iPhone continuity, spatial audio, immersive placement
  • Still the reference premium visionOS device if you do not need the M5 chip

Where it falls short

  • Enterprise price. Meta Quest 3 remains the value, games, and first-headset pick
  • Front-heavy feel; many owners move the battery or add straps to reduce face and neck fatigue
  • External battery pack and short session life versus sitting at a desk all day without planning power
  • VR game library is thin compared with Quest; this is spatial computing first
  • FoV feels tighter at the edges than the sharp center suggests

"I use the Annapro 2 + the other strap that came with the AVP. Then I fastened the battery to the back strap at the back of my head with velcro straps I had around. This provided better balance and stability on my head, and eliminated any pressure on my face."

"Using a velcro pad, I created a pocket in front of the solo knit strap which I use to carry the battery. The weight of the battery balances (approximately) the weight of the AVP. This make it much easier on the neck muscles."

Questions worth asking

Is this the M5 Vision Pro?

No. This slug is the original 2024 M2 Vision Pro. The 2025 M5 model is listed separately as apple-vision-pro-m5.

Should most people buy Vision Pro instead of Quest 3?

No. Quest 3 is the locked winner for most people, standalone, and mixed reality. Buy M2 Vision Pro only if Apple spatial computing and micro-OLED fidelity matter more than library and price.

How bad is the comfort?

It varies, but face pressure and front weight are common complaints. Owners often balance the external battery on the rear strap to reduce neck and cheek load.

Is it good for gaming?

Not as a primary games headset. Immersive media and spatial apps are the stronger uses; Quest still owns the mainstream library.

Should I wait for M5 instead?

If you do not already own Vision Pro and you want the newer chip and Dual Knit Band, compare the M5 page. If you mainly want Apple spatial computing at whatever current deal exists on M2 stock, the original has the same core optical class.
